More than 80 throwers compete at McLeod Athletic Park in Langley
The Ultra Throw Club Championship returned to McLeod Athletic Park Stadium in Langley on September 26 and 27, bringing together more than 80 throwers for a weekend of competition across the throwing events.
With Ultra Throw now well into its second decade, the annual championship continues to grow in both participation and reach.
Last year, the competition was expanded to welcome throwers from outside the Ultra Throw Club. This year, that growth continued, with athletes travelling from throughout British Columbia — including Prince George, Vancouver Island and Kamloops — as well as from across the border in the United States.
Among the visiting athletes was Donna Beard of California, whose participation added an international dimension to this year's championship.
The strong turnout created competitive fields across the throwing events, with athletes of all ages and experience levels taking to the field. Excellent weather conditions also provided an ideal setting for strong performances.
Outstanding Masters Performances
Several exceptional performances resulted in new BC Masters record performances, which are subject to review and approval by the BC Athletics Records Committee.
Shawn Stevens — Ultra Throw Club
Ultra Throw's Shawn Stevens improved upon his own Super Weight Throw record with a throw of 8.00 metres.
His previous mark was 7.36 metres, set on September 15, 2024.
Two BC records for Denise Begg!
Denise Begg — Greyhounds Track and Field Club
Denise Begg produced two outstanding performances:
Weight Throw: 11.57 metres, surpassing the previous record of 10.66 metres set by Kathy Brand on July 26, 2019.
Super Weight Throw: 7.12 metres, surpassing the previous record of 5.44 metres set by Frances Steinfeld of Ultra Throw Club on August 13, 2017.
All of these performances remain subject to the applicable BC Athletics records review and approval process.
One of the highlights of the weekend was welcoming Donna Beard from California to the Ultra Throw Championship. Donna’s number one in the world for her age group in the Throws Pentathlon.
Donna brought her world-class throwing experience to Langley and demonstrated her abilities with a series of impressive performances.
Her participation was a tremendous source of inspiration for the Ultra Throw community — for our female athletes and our male athletes alike. We are grateful that Donna made the journey from California to compete with us and help make this year's championship special.
It's also worth noting that while Canadian Masters Athletics recognizes eligible records achieved by non-members, BC Masters Athletics has different requirements for provincial record recognition. Regardless of record eligibility, we were delighted to have Donna compete at Ultra Throw and showcase her exceptional talent.

Enthusiasm From the Next Generation
Some of the most enthusiastic competitors throughout the weekend were our Junior Development (JD) and U18 athletes.
Their energy and enthusiasm were evident throughout the competition, providing plenty of encouragement for coaches, parents, volunteers and fellow athletes.
For Ultra Throw, developing the next generation of throwers is an important part of the club's future. Having JD and U18 athletes competing alongside experienced throwers creates a valuable environment where younger athletes can learn, compete and be inspired by those around them.
A Huge Thank You to Our Officials and Volunteers
Behind every successful competition is a dedicated team of people working well before the first throw takes place.
Our BC Athletics officials, led by John Cull, conducted the competition with impressive organization and precision. Their experience and preparation were particularly important in helping the meet operate within the current time limitations.
We extend our sincere thanks to John and the entire team of officials for their hard work throughout the weekend.
And to our volunteers who arrived early in the morning to prepare the throwing areas and continued supporting the competition throughout the weekend — thank you.
The early-morning chill didn't stop you from getting the field ready, supporting the officials and athletes, and helping everything run smoothly.
We couldn't do it without you.
It takes a village to run a two day event! Thank you to the BC Athletics officials, and our meet directors and volunteers from Ultra Throw Club!
A Championship That Continues to Grow
The Ultra Throw Club Championship has come a long way since its beginnings more than a decade ago.
What started as a club-focused competition has continued to evolve, welcoming athletes from beyond Ultra Throw and, this year, extending its reach across the border into the United States.
With more than 80 throwers competing over the weekend, the growth of the event is clear.
As participation continues to increase, the organizers may need to consider whether future championships should expand to three days in order to accommodate the number of athletes and events while maintaining the quality of the competition.
That's a discussion for the future, and one that will need to include careful planning and consultation with BC Athletics.
For now, we're simply grateful for an outstanding weekend of throwing.
More than 80 athletes. Athletes from across British Columbia and from the United States. Outstanding performances. Record-breaking throws pending approval. Enthusiastic young throwers. Dedicated officials. And an incredible team of volunteers.
Thank you to everyone who helped make the 2026 Ultra Throw Club Championship a success.
We look forward to seeing you back on the field in 2027.
